DETECTORISTS
20x40cm / 0.35 rOtring Isograph / April 2022
Normally when I’m working on something it takes me a few weeks, but in an effort to get quicker I wanted to try and complete a piece within a few days. I also wanted to do some linework and facial practice, since they’re both things I can find difficult. And what better a topic to tackle than one of my favourite shows: Detectorists!
I’m quite happy with how this piece turned out overall. I still have a lot of work to do on capturing people’s likeness. I think Lance came out well (left character) and somewhat resembles Toby Jones, whereas Andy looks nothing like Mackenzie Crook, except for maybe his baseline sharp facial features.
Apart from that though, I like how the linework works in this. Some of the lines are a lot looser than my usual stuff, and I think it works. The linework for the exterior/interior of the car is quite tight, whereas the linework for the surrounding landscape, i.e. the field and the trees, is a lot looser. I wanted to try and capture the fact the camera is mounted on the car, so everything within the car is crisp, whereas everything outside is a blur as the car speeds along. Not really sure any of that comes through in the drawing, but I think it’s important to have a purpose for when you’re putting down the lines.
